Research has shown what our 1.4 million alumni know to be true: that speech and debate education changes lives. By teaching students critically important skills, speech and debate empowers them to become effective communicators, ethical individuals, critical thinkers, and leaders in a democratic society.
With your help, we can extend the life-changing benefits of speech and debate education to students across the nation. Please support out ongoing commitment to provide leadership for, and build, the speech and debate community, recognize the participation and achievement of students and coaches, share resources, and advocate on behalf of speech and debate education by making a tax-deductible contribution to the National Forensic League today.
William Woods Tate, Jr., Memorial Fund
William Woods Tate, Jr., passed away April 6, 2013, leaving behind a legacy of leadership that will remain unmatched in history. Billy was a five-diamond coach at Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, TN. Prior to joining MBA, he coached at Selma High School in Alabama from 1968 to 1983. Perhaps even more impressive was his leadership within the National Forensic League. He was elected to the Board of Directors in 1988 and served on the Board until his retirement in 2012. He served as President of the National Forensic League from 1998 to 2012, and joined the National Forensic League Hall of Fame in 2000.
In order to honor Billy's legacy, the League has established the William Woods Tate, Jr., Memorial Fund. Contributions to the fund will endow a perpetual award in Mr. Tate's name presented at an annual leadership banquet to be held in his honor.

Leadership Scholarship Fund
For the 2012-2013 school year, the National Forensic League is launching the Leadership Scholarship Program. With your help, this program will offer $1,000 scholarships to two senior NFL members who demonstrate leadership within their team, ongoing participation, and dedication to speech and debate.
Currently, the majority of scholarships provided to speech and debate students are based on success in competition at the National Tournament, but we would like to acknowledge the diligence and commitment a student needs to participate in speech and debate. While competition is very important to give students the opportunity to practice their skill and measure their hard work, the National Forensic League’s main goal is to have students participate in speech and debate, not necessarily win. And while it will always be important to reward students for their success in competition, we don’t want it to be the only way that students can earn scholarships through speech and debate.
You can provide opportunities for students to be rewarded for their hard work in speech and debate by helping them continue in their educational pursuits by donating to the Leadership Scholarship Fund.
With your support, the National Forensic League will reach its goal of $2,000 to deliver two college scholarships each spring after a competitive application process. Students will be able to apply for one of two scholarships beginning in December 2012.

National Tournament Entry Fee Fund
The LFG/NFL National Speech and Debate Tournament is the largest academic competition in the world! For students, it is the culmination of months or years of hard work and dedication to their event. Of the more than 120,000 student members we serve, only about 3,000 students qualify each year, and we want to make sure that all students who qualify have the opportunity to attend.
The National Tournament Entry Fee Fund helps schools and students attending the National Speech and Debate Tournament for the first time, as well as schools with demonstrated financial need. Your support of the National Tournament Entry Fee Fund will allow all students who qualify for the honor of attending the National Tournament the opportunity to do so. It is the contributions of you and so many other supporters that will make the National Tournament a possibility for all students regardless of the financial ability of their school.
Your $30 donation will provide three rounds of judging for one team
Your $60 donation will register one student for the National Tournament
Your $120 donation will register one team of students for the National Tournament
Your gift of any size will help schools in need attend the National Tournament and allow their students the opportunity to compete on a national level and receive the recognition for this achievement. In order to provide these grants to qualified schools before the 2013 National Tournament, please consider making a contribution before April 15, 2013.

Every year, more than 120,000 youth are given a voice with their participation in the National Forensic League. NFL student members receive educational resources to continually advance their forensic training, access to college scholarships, and the opportunity to participate in the annual National Speech and Debate Tournament. Coaches also benefit from their involvement in speech and debate, including online resources and free professional development opportunities that include Coach Clinics – a series of educational workshops taught throughout the National Tournament – which provided more than 400 incidences of education in 2012.
The Annual Fund allows supporters to make an unrestricted gift that contributes to ongoing program growth within the National Forensic League. Your gift allows us to continue generating educational resources for students and coaches, as well as increase support of new programs and programs in low-income schools.
Your contribution will support the mission of the National Forensic League to promote high school and middle school speech and debate activities as a means to develop a student’s essential life skills and values. We believe all students should have the opportunity to express themselves through speech and debate, and earn the many benefits associated with this multifaceted activity.
