The National Forensic League calls on coaches to nominate a deserving graduating senior NFL member for the District Student of the Year award, making her/him eligible for the National Student of the Year, who will become a spokesperson for the activity of debate and speech, and the benefits it brings young people. The NFL has several mechanisms for recognizing competitive achievement, but this program annually rewards students whose attitude transcends trophies and accolades; a student who characterizes the very traits of humility, integrity, leadership, respect and service touted by our .
Eligibility the nominee must:
- be an NFL member in his/her senior year of high school
- demonstrate strong academic standards
- actively engage his/her community through service and action
- exhibit dedication to forensics and commitment to values of the NFL
The nominees coach must complete the application as instructed and send it to the District Chair.
- Each district sets its own timetable, but must submit its winning students application electronically to the National Office by April 15. That may require a district to make a decision on the winning student prior to its district tournament. Each district will receive a blank plaque with their other awards; a chair may have a local engraver add the name of the district winner, once its decided. The chair should present the award at the final date of the district tournament series.
- Coaches send nomination applications to the District chair (preferably digitally); who may utilize one of the following processes for having a panel review applications and independently rank their preference of candidates to determine one winner for the district:
- Have the District Committee and alternates review the applications. In the case of a conflict of interest (i.e., a committee members student is a nominee), the coach should not rank his/her own student, and an average of the other committee members ranks shall be used in place of that coachs rank of his/her own student.
- Work with the District Committee to appoint retired coaches or administrators
- Work with a neighboring district committee to swap applications
- A method proposed by Jan. 1 and approved by the National Office.
- Each District Student of the Year whose nomination materials are received from their District Chair by April 15 is eligible for consideration as one of the six National Student of the Year finalists, who will be interviewed at the National Tournament in June by a panel of distinguished, neutral coaches from across the country. All of these finalists will be honored as the winner is announced at the awards ceremony at the end of the National Tournament.
